# Moving checklist, week by week

Set your moving day and get a dated plan from eight weeks before to two weeks after. Tick tasks off as you go, add your own, then print it or put the key dates in your calendar.

## How the checklist works

Choose your moving day and the list splits into eleven blocks: one for each of the eight weeks before the move, moving day itself, and the first two weeks in the new home. Every block shows its dates. The week you are in is highlighted, and weeks already behind you say how many tasks are left to catch up, so a move only three weeks away still starts from the right place.

The options shape the list:

- **How you are moving.** Hiring movers adds quotes, booking, the inventory check and damage claims. Doing it yourself swaps those for vehicle hire, helpers and returning the van on time.
- **The home you are leaving.** Renting adds notice, the move-out inspection, photos and the deposit. Owning adds agreeing a handover date with your buyer.
- **Children, pets, a car, moving abroad.** Each adds its own tasks, such as school records, a pet bag, updating your vehicle papers, or visas and customs.

Tick tasks as you finish them; the little doorway beside each week fills with light as you go. Remove anything that does not apply to you (it can be restored), and add your own tasks to any week. The list is saved in this browser only.

**Example:** for a move on 15 March 2027, the first block runs from 18 to 24 January and the last ends on 29 March. The calendar file then holds one all-day reminder at the start of each week still ahead, listing that week's unticked tasks, plus moving day itself.

Notice periods, address registration and similar legal steps differ from country to country. Tasks that depend on them say so: check your local rules.

## Questions

**How far ahead should I start planning a move?**

Eight weeks gives time to compare quotes, sort your belongings and give notice without rushing, so the checklist starts there. If your move is sooner, set the date anyway: earlier weeks are marked as catch-up, and you can work through them first.

**Is my checklist saved?**

Yes, in this browser's local storage only. Your date, options, ticks and own tasks are never sent anywhere. Clearing your browser's site data removes them, so download the text file or print the list if you want a copy elsewhere.

**What does the calendar file contain?**

An all-day event on moving day, and one at the start of each week that has not finished yet, listing the tasks still unticked. Most calendar apps can import a .ics file. If you change the moving date later, delete the old events before importing a new file.

**Does it work for a move to another country?**

Yes. Tick Moving abroad to add visa and residence checks, customs paperwork, shipping, banking and consulate tasks, and Pets as well for pet import rules. Requirements depend on the destination, so treat these tasks as prompts to check the official rules there.

**Why do some tasks say "check your local rules"?**

Notice periods, parking permits, address registration, voter registration and vehicle paperwork are set by each country, and often by each city or contract. The checklist reminds you that the step exists rather than guessing at a rule that may not apply where you live.

**Can I share the list with the rest of my household?**

There are no accounts, so the list lives on one device. Copy it as text into a shared note or message, download the text file, or print it and pin it to the fridge.
